UPS Shipping (Official)

If you ship UPS from Europe and already have a UPS account with negotiated rates, this replaces ups.com and saves real time — but it does not show rates at checkout, and the standout feature reviewers talk about is the support agent, not the software.

Should you install it?

This is a UPS-only label dashboard for merchants who already have a UPS account number, and on that narrow job it works: orders sync in, labels and commercial invoices print in bulk, tracking and fulfilment go back to Shopify, and European merchants consistently say it beats keying orders into ups.com. Install it only if you understand what it does not do — it shows no rates at checkout (that is the single in-window 1★, from a store installed over a year), it prices labels off your own UPS account so without a negotiated rate it can cost several times Shopify's built-in UPS labels, and it has no split shipments, address validation or returns portal. US stores should check service coverage first: Ground Saver and SurePost were unavailable and the developer confirmed the app was built for Europe first. Budget for a support ticket rather than self-service setup — the interface is widely described as unclear, but support configures it for you fast and ships small feature requests in days. The current live risk is not a bug in the app: UPS's own OAuth 2.0 migration broke working installs in late 2025, and at least one store saw checkout fail until support intervened.

Fair evidence. The corpus is large but thin where it matters. Only 5 negative reviews exist in 119, and only 17 reviews fall in the last 12 months — too few to test reliability claims. 45% of reviewers had the app under a month, several 5★ reviews come from stores with hours or minutes of use, and one reviewer states the team asked them for a review, so the rating largely measures onboarding support rather than operation. The reviews that genuinely describe production behaviour are concentrated in 2023-2024. Nothing in the corpus lets me judge label accuracy at volume, long-run sync reliability, or pricing beyond a single comparison, so those are unassessed rather than clean.

Right for

  • Stores shipping UPS-only from Europe (UK, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, France, Ireland) that currently key orders into ups.com by hand
  • Merchants with their own UPS account number and negotiated rates who want to use them instead of Shopify's built-in UPS rates
  • International senders who need commercial invoices generated automatically at label print (reviewers ship NL to US/Canada/Australia, and non-EU from Sweden)
  • Shops printing to thermal label printers — Dymo 4XL, Zebra GC420d and ZPL setups are all confirmed working, usually after a support ticket
  • Merchants willing to open a ticket to get things configured; the setup is not self-explanatory but support does the configuration for you

Wrong for

  • Anyone expecting live UPS rates at checkout — the app does not do this, and two reviewers installed it for that reason and left 1★
  • US stores that rely on UPS Ground Saver or SurePost; a US reviewer found these services unavailable and the developer confirmed the app was built for the European market first
  • High-volume shippers — a UK merchant over a year in says it is 'not that good if you have a lot of orders to ship' and uses a third-party app instead
  • Stores needing split shipments, address validation, or a customer-facing returns portal — all named as missing
  • Merchants without negotiated UPS rates: label cost comes off your own account and one reviewer found it 3-4x Shopify's built-in UPS price
  • New or low-volume shippers who cannot get a UPS account approved — one reviewer was blocked by a shipping-volume requirement

What will annoy you

Interface is hard to read and the workflow is not self-explanatory; UPS service names in the app confuse people: 7 reviews, steady, last seen 2025-09.

How the developer behaves when it breaks

Replies are rare overall (6%) but land on most negatives (60%). The selection matters: the three negatives that got public replies were scope or expectation disputes the developer could rebut — no checkout rates (2922, 2579) and missing US services (7922) — and those replies explain and redirect to email rather than fix anything. The two negatives describing real product and onboarding problems, a sync 'show stopper' (7944) and a UPS account volume requirement (7267), got no reply at all. Inside tickets the record is genuinely good: ZPL printing solved in 15 minutes (5741), direct label printing added in about an hour (0497), a package weight transfer feature in 48 hours (6751), an automation rules request delivered the next day (5510), and a 1★ crash review revised up to 4★ after a 24-hour fix (0045). Two replies are argumentative rather than helpful, publicly counting how many tickets the merchant opened or failed to answer (9821, 0620).

Red flags

  • The app is free to install but bills labels to your own UPS account, so your cost can be far higher than Shopify's built-in UPS labels if you have no negotiated rate. The developer confirms this is by design and points you to your UPS account manager. 2579 1096
  • The listing name reads as first-party UPS, and at least one merchant concluded it is not. The developer's own reply says the app was initially built for the European market and defends its official status by pointing to a ups.com listing — so US service coverage (Ground Saver, SurePost) is narrower than the name implies. 7922
  • UPS-side platform changes (the OAuth 2.0 migration) broke working installs. One US store reports the fallout reached the storefront: 'my customers were unable to place orders.' Recovery required contacting support, not a self-service fix. 2213 0142 2754
  • The two negative reviews describing genuine product problems — a sync show-stopper and an account-approval block — got no public developer reply, while the three that were expectation disputes the developer could rebut all got one. 7944 7267
  • Rates are shown as discounted but one reviewer reports persistent mis-rating that never resolved across multiple re-syncs: 'it ALWAYS incorrectly rates our shipping costs'. 1096

Trend

Volume is down — 17 reviews in the last 12 months against 25 the year before, about 1.4 a month. Negative share ticked up slightly (5.9% in-window vs 4.2% lifetime) but that is one 1★ out of 17, too thin to read as a trend. The bigger change is content quality: the in-window reviews are mostly one-or-two-line support praise ('Excellent quick responses and efficient solutions everytime', 4900), while the detailed, feature-specific reviews that tell you how the app behaves in production — packaging profiles, pickup scheduling, three-fold commercial invoices (7281), the ShippyPro comparison (6751), the service-naming confusion (3063) — are all from 2023 and 2024. One genuinely new theme appeared in the window: UPS's own OAuth 2.0 migration broke working installs and needed support to restore (2213, 0142). Two older themes have gone quiet: Shopify sync stalls (last seen 2024-10) and label over-pricing versus Shopify's built-in UPS rates (last seen 2024-11). Checkout-rate confusion has not gone away — the single in-window 1★ is exactly that, from a store that had been installed over a year (2922).
