Multi-carrier labels and rates

ShipStation Orders & Inventory

A strong shipping hub for multi-channel stores that pack their own orders, but expect billing disputes, slow escalations, and Shopify order edits that don't carry over.

Should you install it?

ShipStation is a full shipping workstation, not a light Shopify add-on. Long-time users with in-house packing and several sales channels credit it with big time savings through automation rules, batch printing, rate shopping and barcode verification, and it works at anywhere from hundreds to thousands of orders a day. The recurring risks are a separate billing wallet and carrier charges that can show up weeks later (duties/DDP, adjustments, double charges), subscription charges that continue after cancelling, and support that can leave a broken carrier or feature escalated for weeks. It also imports each Shopify order only once, so stores that edit, split or move orders between locations after checkout report constant manual fixes, and Canadian exporters needing CUSMA documents should look elsewhere for now. If you install, use the onboarding help, check your wallet and carrier invoices every month, and keep a backup way to print labels.

Fair evidence. There are 700 reviews over 13 years and the recent complaints are detailed and consistent. But about half of last year's reviews are onboarding-rep praise from very new users, so recent satisfaction is hard to measure.

Right for

  • Stores selling on several channels (Shopify plus Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Walmart, TikTok Shop or Faire) that want one shipping queue (6616, 0038, 0997, 1012)
  • In-house warehouses shipping from roughly 150 orders a month up to thousands a day that will set up automation rules, batch printing and barcode scan-to-verify (9545, 5614, 9525, 8652)
  • Merchants with their own USPS/UPS/FedEx/Canada Post/Royal Mail/Australia Post accounts who want rate shopping across them (7808, 6470, 3573)
  • New users on paid tiers who will use the assigned implementation manager to get set up (2758, 4356, 8999)

Wrong for

  • Canadian stores shipping into the US that need CUSMA/USMCA or Section 232 documents, or that use DDP (4987, 1959, 5067, 2813)
  • Multi-location stores that split, re-route or edit orders in Shopify after they import (4386, 5019, 3052, 3365)
  • Very small or occasional shippers who want the cheapest labels and a simple setup (1336, 5589, 4877, 4544)
  • Operations that can't afford days or weeks of downtime while a ticket waits for escalation (5710, 0971, 1908, 7775)
  • German shippers who need DHL international (1908)
  • Warehouses that need local-pickup orders to show up in the shipping queue (1035, 3977)

What will annoy you

Support is slow and 'escalated' tickets sit for weeks with no timeline or fix: 55 reviews, steady, last seen 2026-08.

How the developer behaves when it breaks

Since about 2023 the developer replies to most negative reviews within days, almost always with the same template: 'we've located your open ticket and a team member/manager will reach out'. A few replies are followed by a fix the reviewer confirms: a $6,000 customs overcharge refunded (7722), a blocked account restored after a manager stepped in (0778), a connection issue resolved (5620), a tier problem fixed (3577), plus refunds or reinstatement the developer reports in its own reply (0324, 3067, 5616). Other reviewers say the reply changed nothing: still no answer two weeks later (9765), the reply matched two earlier emails with no outcome (0971), partial help then back to 1 star (5634), no contact a year after the reply (8856), and a 2-week outage that ended with a $400 credit against ~$3,000 in losses (3570). Sometimes the developer disputes the complaint, e.g. denying a breach (2505) and saying DDP was opt-in (4115).

Red flags

  • Tracking handed to Shopify with the wrong carrier link (GlobalPost numbers sent to USPS), so customers see invalid tracking 0974

Trend

There were 160 reviews in the last 12 months, up from 96 in the 12 before, and the negative share fell to 16.9% (22.8% all-time). Most of that growth is onboarding-rep 5-star reviews, so the lower negative share overstates any real improvement. The complaints have shifted. The 2022 wave over the forced V3 interface and the 2024–early 2025 wave of login and crash complaints have eased. Recent complaints are mostly about money: retroactive DDP and duty backcharges, wallet overcharges, billing after cancellation, and a $18k charge on a connected carrier account. There are also newer cross-border customs gaps for Canadian shippers after tariffs, and ongoing multi-location and split-order sync failures. Slow escalated support shows up across the whole 13-year history and is still reported in Aug 2026.
