Multi-carrier labels and rates

Shippo ‑ Simplified Shipping

Still the cheapest, simplest way to batch-buy labels outside Shopify Shipping — but the live human support people praised for a decade has been replaced by email and an AI chatbot, so budget for solving your own problems.

Should you install it?

Shippo does the core job well and has for a decade: it pulls Shopify and marketplace orders into one screen, compares USPS/UPS/FedEx/DHL rates, and batch-prints labels and customs forms cheaper than Shopify Shipping, with no monthly fee on the entry plan. The consistent reason people stay is money and speed on high-volume domestic USPS printing, and the ability to bill their own carrier accounts. The clear and current risk is support: the live chat and phone help that dominated the positive reviews for years has been cut back to email and an AI chatbot, and reviewers in 2025–2026 describe multi-month unresolved tickets — including a store shipping thousands of orders a quarter to Canada. Also check three things before you commit: subscription charges have continued after uninstall for several merchants, the bundled insurance has an undisclosed deductible and cap that has cost sellers thousands on real claims, and item-level customs data still isn't imported so international orders need manual entry. Fine if you ship mostly domestic US parcels, are comfortable troubleshooting by email, and don't rely on the insurance; risky if a shipping outage on a Tuesday afternoon would stop your business.

Fair evidence. 318 reviews over 12 years with 303 carrying text gives a solid picture of what the app does and who it fails. Confidence is held to medium because ~40% of the last 12 months' reviews arrived in one two-day burst in February 2026, half of them rating-only and one-liners, which makes recent positive signal thin; the detailed recent evidence is almost entirely negative, so the true current experience is probably between the two. The support-model change is well evidenced across four independent reviews including a 5★ one, but I cannot tell from reviews alone how many merchants it actually affects.

Right for

  • US stores printing USPS labels in bulk who want pay-per-label pricing rather than a monthly seat fee (9225, 7215, 5961, 1718)
  • Sellers fulfilling from more than one channel — Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Wix, Squarespace — who want a single label queue (7482, 8076, 5141, 7885)
  • Stores that want to bill their own negotiated UPS / FedEx / DHL account numbers instead of using Shopify's rates (2305, 5828, 4774, 3465)
  • Low-to-mid volume: reviewers report running fine at 'a couple to 50 packages a day' and ~500 labels/month (7482, 7242)
  • Wholesale, in-store and phone orders that never went through the Shopify cart and so can't use Shopify Shipping rates (5928, 3108, 0846)

Wrong for

  • Anyone who needs a human on the phone or live chat when shipping breaks mid-day — live support was cut back and reviewers now hit email queues and a chatbot (9372, 2167, 3808, 8263)
  • High-volume international shippers: item-level customs data is still not pulled from products, so it is manual entry per order (4728, 2700, 8958)
  • Canadian stores relying on FedEx (the discount referral programme is US-only) or on Canada Post commercial API accounts (8686, 5895, 4721)
  • Australian stores using Australia Post eParcel or needing carrier manifests for returns (1827, 9358, 7131)
  • Stores that need shipping insurance to actually pay out — claim terms, deductibles and caps surprised several sellers (0347, 3487, 6924)
  • Anyone shipping non-standard shapes such as tubes, where girth can't be entered and USPS surcharges land afterwards (7169)
  • Orders that need multiple boxes under one order/tracking number (0969, 6949, 3218)

What will annoy you

Tickets acknowledged and escalated but left unresolved for weeks or months: 24 reviews, steady, last seen 2026-07.

How the developer behaves when it breaks

Replies are near-universal on recent reviews (63% of negatives overall), but a reply is not the same as a fix. Genuine resolutions do appear and reviewers confirm them: 9126 updated to 'Shippo fixed my issue quickly! We're back up and running!', 4721 and 3801 similarly. Against that, a large share of recent replies close with 'we were unable to locate an account based on the information provided in your review' and redirect to a support form (0183, 2167, 3516, 6924) — which leaves the public record with no outcome. Some replies do give substantive product answers (5901 on Amazon phone-number formatting, 6042 on the 30-label free cap, 7169 on USPS dimensional surcharges). The long-running failures — support wait times, order sync, insurance claims — get sympathetic replies over years without the underlying complaint disappearing (1612, 1363, 8396). Two replies are dated after the review they answer by years (5480, replied 2026 to a 2018 review), suggesting a bulk reply pass rather than case handling.

Red flags

  • Subscription charges continued after the app was uninstalled from Shopify, and unexpected plan fees appeared on accounts that had barely used the service. Recurring complaint across 2018–2026. 0347 0649 5320 3808 6015 0271
  • Shipping insurance sold at the point of label purchase, then paid out against a deductible and a $5,000 cap the seller says was never disclosed; one claim on an $8,544 shipment paid $3,750. 3487 0347 6924
  • Developer replies to recent negative reviews frequently say they cannot locate the account from the review name, which ends the public thread without a stated fix. 0183 2167 3516 6924 2684
  • Support silence during live shipping outages — reviewers describe days without a usable response while orders sit unshipped. 3808 7976 8396 9205 2846
  • One 2020 report of another store's data — orders, addresses, payment details — appearing in a newly installed account, with no way to change billing. Single instance, not repeated since. 1914
  • One 2019 report of roughly $2,000 in fraudulent labels charged overnight; the developer disputed that a breach occurred and refunded. Single instance. 2173

Trend

Review volume jumped from 9 in the prior 12 months to 46 in the last 12 — but ~19 of those arrived in a single two-day burst in February 2026, half of them rating-only, so the spike is collection activity rather than a change in sentiment. Negative share is actually lower in the last 12 months (15%) than lifetime (21%). What has genuinely changed is the theme mix. The dominant praise of 2014–2022 was fast, reachable human support; from November 2023 (7976: live chat 'entirely dismantled') that reverses, and by 2025–2026 the complaint is an AI chatbot and email-only queues (3808, 2167, 9372) — confirmed by a 5★ reviewer who asks for 'the humans i used to be able to talk to' back (8263). Meanwhile the 2020–2023 interface-redesign revolt has stopped: no reviewer has mentioned it since March 2023 despite 60+ reviews since, and the batch-label failures of 2019–2021 have likewise gone quiet. Billing-after-uninstall, insurance claims and post-shipment surcharges are the failures that have carried straight through to 2026.
