Multi-carrier labels and rates

Pirate Ship: CheapARR Shipping

If you ship USPS/UPS from a US address and don't mind working in a second browser tab, it's free, stable and usually cheaper than retail — but it never quotes rates at your checkout, and on some lanes it's no longer cheaper than Shopify Shipping.

Should you install it?

Pirate Ship is a free, outside-the-admin label tool that pulls your Shopify orders, prices USPS and UPS at commercial rates, prints batches and SCAN forms, and writes tracking back — and years of long-tenured reviewers say it is stable and that support is fast humans, not bots. Install it if you ship USPS/UPS from a US address, want to drop a per-label or monthly shipping subscription, and are happy working in a second tab. Do not install it if you need rates at checkout, sell on Amazon, ship Media Mail, or need packing slips and gift notes inside Shopify — reviewers name every one of those as missing. The savings claim needs a caveat: it is large on cubic-eligible small boxes and international, but two 2026 reviewers on long tenure say rates have risen to or past Shopify Shipping parity on their lanes, so price your own five most common packages both ways before switching. The developer has never replied publicly to a review in nine years, so the one account-freeze report (ID photo demanded over chat, Shopify Plus, Dec 2024) and the Amazon automated-message report have no visible resolution.

Fair evidence. Plenty of text (178 of 181 reviews) and long tenures give a solid read on what the app does well. But 126 of the reviews arrived in dated bursts after a year of near-silence, which means the sample is drawn from happy long-term users rather than everyone; the 10 negatives are too few and too scattered to size real failure rates. Several failures rest on a single reviewer (account freeze, Amazon messaging, tracking auto-sync, broken integration), so I cannot say whether they are one-offs or common.

Right for

  • US small and mid-size stores shipping USPS and UPS, domestic and international (4937, 1935, 6843, 0649)
  • Stores that need USPS SCAN forms, which reviewers say Shopify doesn't provide (3150, 3695, 1316, 0857)
  • Sellers wanting to escape per-label or monthly shipping-app fees — several name Shippo, ShipStation, Stamps.com, Endicia as what they left (8392, 7641, 1935, 3088, 5206)
  • Multi-channel sellers who want one label queue across Shopify plus Etsy, eBay and PayPal (7833, 8762, 1551, 2203, 4374)
  • Batch shippers with uniform boxes: 150+ labels in a day (3545), a 600-package CSV upload (1249), 20/day (2203), 1500-2500/year (0161)
  • Small-box shippers who can use USPS cubic pricing, where the savings are largest (2833, 0620, 1777)
  • Stores shipping dangerous goods, which one reviewer says Shopify can't handle (2203)

Wrong for

  • Merchants outside the US — two Canadian reviewers say registration forces you to pick a US state and the listing doesn't warn you (1372, 7367)
  • Anyone who wants live carrier rates shown to customers at Shopify checkout; reviewers say it can't push rates in (3104, 2833)
  • Amazon sellers — no Amazon channel (5717, 3545, 5078), and one high-volume seller says automated messages kept going out after being disabled, risking their Amazon account (9958)
  • Stores that want everything inside the Shopify admin, including packing slips and gift notes (1852, 8729, 0922)
  • Media Mail shippers — one reviewer says Media Mail is at retail rate, not commercial (3509)
  • Shippers of goods over $100 in value who expect painless claims; coverage above that runs through Shipsurance and reviewers describe it as slow and restrictive (4721, 9843)
  • Orders needing split shipments across multiple parcels (7641)

What will annoy you

Rates have risen; on some lanes it is now the same as or dearer than Shopify Shipping: 7 reviews, steady, last seen 2026-01.

How the developer behaves when it breaks

No public replies at all — reply rate is 0% across 181 reviews and 110 months, including the ten negatives (2923, 7108, 8380, 8361, 9958, 4721). That is a listing-page silence, not a support silence: dozens of reviewers describe fast human chat replies at odd hours and on weekends (0847, 5617, 0809, 1061). The two things merchants asked for most in old reviews did get built — UPS (requested 1249, 4581; present by 2021 per 2833, 4937) and weight import (2715; working per 1209). What is not visible is anyone addressing the specific failures publicly, so you cannot tell from the listing whether the account-freeze (8361) or the Amazon automated-message problem (9958) was ever resolved.

Red flags

  • Shipping halted with no notice and chat support demanded a photo of the merchant holding their ID; a Shopify Plus store, one report, December 2024, no public reply 8361
  • Automated customer messages kept sending after the merchant disabled them, which they say put their Amazon account at risk; one report, April 2024, and they say support quality dropped ('now it's outsourced garbage') 9958
  • Carrier billing adjustments land weeks after delivery and are charged automatically; you have to police the reports yourself. Last reported 2024-01 and contradicted by recent users who switched TO Pirate Ship to escape adjustments (0766, 4002) 4721 7650 0766
  • Claims above the included $100 go to a third party (Shipsurance) and one merchant describes 1-2 week processing and a rude agent while customers had to hold damaged goods; last reported 2024-01 4721 9843
  • Advertised 'commercial pricing on everything' does not apply to Media Mail, per one 2021 reviewer 3509

Trend

Volume changed shape, not substance. The app sat almost silent through 2023-2025 (2 reviews in the prior 12 months) and then drew 126 in the last 12, nearly all in dated clusters. The content of those recent reviews is consistent with the 2018-2022 ones: cheap postage, free, good chat support, clean Shopify sync — written mostly by three-to-eight-year users. The old complaints have genuinely gone quiet: no UPS (last 2021-08), weights not importing (last 2019-05), billing adjustments (last 2024-01), insurance claims (last 2024-01), US-only signup (last 2024-07). What remains current is different and softer: rates creeping toward Shopify parity (0380, 0843, both 2026-01), no Amazon channel (5717, 2026-07), no packing slips or gift notes (8729, 0922), batch service selection being fiddly (2923, 2026-03), and one Canadian merchant frustrated that tracking auto-sync can't be turned off (7108, 2026-07). Only 2 of 126 recent reviews are negative, but see the integrity note before reading that as a safety signal.
