Multi-carrier labels and rates
netParcel
If you ship parcels out of Canada without your own negotiated carrier contracts, this reliably cuts your rates — but netParcel is the shipper of record, so lost-parcel claims and after-the-fact surcharges are yours to absorb through their support desk.
Should you install it?
netParcel does one thing well and has done it for 13 years: it gives Canadian merchants without carrier contracts access to discounted UPS, Purolator, FedEx, DHL and Loomis rates, with Shopify order import and tracking sync, and reviewers consistently report it beating Canada Post on heavy, long-distance and cross-border parcels. Support is the most praised feature after price, and the developer has shipped real fixes when a paying customer complained in a 4-star review. The two things to go in with your eyes open about are billing and claims: multiple reviewers report the quoted rate is not the invoiced rate once residential, fuel, extended-area and weight-adjustment surcharges land, and because netParcel is the shipper of record you cannot escalate a lost parcel to the courier yourself. Budget for a reconciliation step rather than treating the quote as your true cost, and check before installing that your Shopify plan includes carrier-calculated shipping — a March 2026 reviewer found that out only after registering, with the explanatory link returning a 404. If you ship from Canada, do not have your own contracts, and your parcels are bigger than a letter, it is worth installing; if you need guaranteed quote accuracy, bulk or marketplace order sync, or strong claims handling, look elsewhere.
Fair evidence. The core proposition — discounted multi-carrier rates for Canadian shippers — is corroborated by roughly 150 text reviews across 13 years, including many from merchants with 3-6 years of tenure, so confidence there is high. Confidence in present-day service quality is low and drags the overall down: only six reviews in the last 12 months, two of them textless, leaving four usable recent texts, one of which is a complaint. The negative sample is tiny in absolute terms (3 reviews) which means the failure modes are under-documented rather than proven rare, and the developer has not replied publicly to anything since September 2024, so there is no visible evidence of how current issues are handled. A quarter of all reviewers had used the app under a month, and short-tenure reviewers cannot report on the billing and claims problems that matter most here.
Right for
- Canadian small and mid-size stores with no negotiated carrier contracts who currently default to Canada Post (2250, 2862, 1928, 9441)
- Stores shipping oversized or heavy boxes Canada Post won't take (9159, 4633, 7044, 7128)
- Canada-to-US and international shippers wanting one account across UPS/FedEx/DHL/Purolator instead of separate carrier accounts (2967, 0858, 2862, 7136)
- Merchants who want shipping billed in Canadian dollars rather than losing 4-5% on FX (7005, 9845)
- Stores that also ship from Etsy, eBay, Amazon or ShipStation and want one label portal outside Shopify (8691, 7254, 3621, 0182)
Wrong for
- Stores on a Shopify plan without carrier-calculated shipping — that requirement is not disclosed before you register (6342, 7606)
- Anyone who needs the quoted price to be the final price; carrier surcharges and weight re-rates arrive on the invoice (7606, 3039, 9450, 1809)
- Stores where lost-parcel claims are a routine cost — you cannot claim directly with the courier (8574)
- Operations wanting bulk or marketplace order sync; import is per-order and Amazon Seller integration is still incomplete (3559, 3276, 1508, 9599)
- US-only domestic shippers — the carrier mix, evidence base and 157 of 177 reviews are Canadian (0961, 7606)
What will annoy you
Order import is one-at-a-time; no marketplace sync, no line items, weights or HS codes carried over: 6 reviews, steady, last seen 2026-05.
How the developer behaves when it breaks
Replies to roughly 40% of reviews overall and 0% of negative ones. Every 1-2 star review (8574 lost-package claims, 6636 uninstall, 9687 Purolator pickups withdrawn during a Canada Post disruption) went unanswered, while 5-star reviews received personalised paragraphs naming the store. Where the developer does engage with criticism it is on 4-5 star reviews, and there fixes are real and verifiable: 3039's missing customs form was added to the label download, 7651's account was updated so checkout rates include the residential delivery surcharge, and 1416 reports a requested change 'quickly implemented'. Against that, 3276 and 2865 got only 'we will keep you posted' on import features that reviews show were still missing in 2026 (3559). The one 3-star outage (8032) drew an explanation blaming a carrier API and a promise of an account-management call, with no follow-up visible. Most important for a 2026 decision: no developer reply appears on any review after 2024-09-23, including the March 2026 complaint about the undisclosed plan requirement (6342).
What goes wrong 7 recurring themes
- Requires Shopify carrier-calculated shipping (a plan upgrade), not disclosed before registration; the 'Learn More' link 404s 2 reviews steady, last seen 2026-03
“the app requires 'carrier-calculated shipping,' which wasn't clearly stated upfront. To make matters worse, the 'Learn More' link led to a 404 page error.” review 6342
- Order import is one-at-a-time; no marketplace sync, no line items, weights or HS codes carried over 6 reviews steady, last seen 2026-05
“Need development though on the Amazon Seller integration.” review 3559
- The quoted rate is not the billed rate — residential, fuel, extended-area surcharges and weight re-rates appear on the invoice 4 reviews fading, last seen 2023-06
“my package weighing 1.15 kg but after paying for shipping, the weight is changed to 2.27 kg and there's an extra charge for the weight adjustment” review 3039
- Service went dark without warning — rates stopped appearing at checkout, or carrier pickups were withdrawn, with poor communication 4 reviews fading, last seen 2021-06
“Stopped working with no warning. Many customers started calling telling us we didn't offer shiping.” review 8032
- Invoicing arrives per-shipment and in inconsistent formats, making reconciliation harder 2 reviews steady, last seen 2025-05
“My only small gripe is the inconsistency in how their invoicing appears to come in different formats.” review 4118
- No support on lost-package claims, and the merchant cannot escalate to the courier directly 1 review fading, last seen 2022-07
“Super disappointed with the lack of support from netparcel when opening a claim or a ticket. They do literally nothing to help, and you can't go direct to the courier because the sender is netparcel.” review 8574
Also 8574 - Quote-after-the-fact only — no real-time rates or Canada Post at checkout 4 reviews resolved, last seen 2020-12
“I love Netparcels rates, but they need to be integrated into Shopify like Canada Post. Customers don't want a shipping quote after the fact, they want real time rates in checkout.” review 2802
What it does well 5 themes
- Rates materially below Canada Post and below what a small shop can negotiate directly 132 reviews
“I find their courier rates are cheaper than Postal without tracking. That pretty much says it all in my opinion.” review 2250
- Responsive support by email and phone, including chasing couriers on the merchant's behalf 68 reviews
“The customer service is, without exaggeration, excellent. They always respond very promptly, are there to assist me when needed, and consistently follow up as required.” review 7861
- Shopify order import auto-populates the address and pushes tracking back on fulfilment 54 reviews
“the site is easy to use, I can import my orders quickly, and support is great” review 0071
- One screen to compare several carriers and service levels for each parcel 41 reviews
“amazing for comparing and contrasting rates between different companies without switching between tabs” review 3474
- Works outside Shopify too — standalone portal, ShipStation, PayPal, Etsy/eBay/Amazon imports 9 reviews
“You can also use netparcel even if you do not have a shopify website which is a big plus.” review 3621
Red flags
- netParcel is the shipper of record, so on a lost or damaged parcel you cannot open a claim with the courier yourself — you are entirely dependent on netParcel's claims desk. One report, 2022, but the mechanism is structural, not anecdotal. 8574
- Zero developer replies on all three 1-2 star reviews across 13 years, while 5-star reviews get warm multi-sentence replies. Matches the stated reply_rate_negative of 0.0. 8574 6636 9687
- Developer replies stopped entirely after 2024-09-23. No reply on any 2025 or 2026 review, including the 4-star complaints about the undisclosed plan requirement and invoicing. 0071 3559 9425 6342 4118
- Billing surprise: the rate shown at quote is not what you are charged. One reviewer reports surcharges on roughly 90% of shipments; another reports a package being re-weighed from 1.15 kg to 2.27 kg repeatedly. Last reported 2023-06, but review volume has collapsed since, so silence is not evidence of a fix. 7606 3039 9450
- Checkout rates have disappeared without notice, with customers calling to say shipping was unavailable. The developer attributed it to a carrier API, not their own code. 8032 9687
- A Shopify plan upgrade may be required to use the app as advertised, and this is only discovered after registration; the explanatory link is broken as of 2026-03. 6342 7606
Trend
Volume has collapsed. Six reviews in the last 12 months against 12 the year before and a 13-year total of 177 — about one review every two months. Two of those six have no text at all (5692, 2840), so the entire current-state evidence base is four reviews: 0071 (Aug 2026), 3559 (May 2026), 9425 (Mar 2026) and 6342 (Mar 2026). Three are positive and repeat the same long-standing themes — easy order import, good rates, responsive support — from merchants with 1-5 years of tenure, which at least suggests the core service still works for people already on it. The fourth and only substantive recent text is a complaint (6342). Do not read 'zero negatives in 12 months' as improvement: zero out of four texts is not a signal, and the one detailed recent account is about an undisclosed plan requirement and a broken documentation link. What has genuinely changed for the better since the earlier years is checkout integration — the 2018-2020 complaints about quote-after-the-fact and no Canada Post (2802, 1377, 8317) are directly contradicted by 8149 in June 2025 describing real-time checkout rates for Canada Post and other couriers. What has changed for the worse is developer engagement, which stopped visibly in September 2024.
